' Ashmore, Co. Dorset : a history of the parish
with index to the registers, 1651 to 1820"The Parish of Ashmore is situated on Cranborne Chase, on the edge of Wiltshire, but within the County of Dorset. It lies on high ground, the village being about 720 feet above the sea; it is said indeed to be the highest village in the county. The range of down which has its highest point at Win Green, some three miles from Ashmore, slopes gently southward.
ASHMORE MANOR FARM.
After holding it for eleven years, Richard Combe sold it, in 1630, for £3,300, to Henry Arnold, of Bagbere, in the parish of Milton or Middleton, co. Dorset {i.e. Milton Abbas), gentleman.
Arnold belonged to a family much more considerable than the Combes, and evidently prosperous at the time. The manor and farm of Bagbere they had owned since 1570; but it is hard to understand how our Henry Arnold could describe himself as of that place, for in 1613 John Tregonwell of Milton Abbey had bought it of Robert Arnold.
The family purchased Ilsington, in the parish of Puddletown, in 1603, and sold it at some date in the last century. Henry Arnold, who bought the Ashmore farm, married Anne Huntly, and died in 1643. These few particulars are derived from Hutchins' account of Bagbere and Ilsington ; under the latter he gives a short pedigree of the family. Arnold only held the farm for four years. In 1634 he sold it for the same sum of £3,300 to George Barber, with whose descendants it remained till 1765.

Further inland, at one of Reverend William Barnes churches, there is a table-tomb of the same period; again with the same skull-and-crossbones mortality motif. Close to the ancient preaching cross in the churchyard of Whitcombe Parish Church, near Dorchester, a Portland stone tomb with elegant classical lines carries a Latin inscription commemorating Melchisedeck Gillet who died aged 75 on 6th September 1680, and Christiane his wife.

Ilsington Manor, Puddletown, co. Dorset
Dorset's largest shooting estate gets £18m price tag.
A country estate and manor have gone on the open market for the first time in almost 150 years.

A 2,400 acre shooting estate and manor, the largest ever in Dorset, has come on the open market for the first time in 150 years with a price tag of £18m (€21.1m). It is the latest large estate to be put on the market as demand for arable land soars.
The Ilsington Estate in Puddletown, southwest England, could be among the most expensive ever sold in the county, if both manor and estate are bought together.
Priced at £12m, the agricultural and sporting estate is being sold by Chesterton Humberts and includes farms, cottages, residential properties, woodland, workshops, and fishing rights. It is being sold as a whole or in lots.
The manor, which is situated to the north of the estate, is being sold separately through Savills Estate Agents for offers in excess of £6m. Ilsington House was sold around 35 years ago and is known today as the Old Manor.
The Grade II-listed house has nine acres of land, five bedrooms, and a staff or guest wing, with a guide price of £6m with Savills.
Both manor and estate are being sold through the trust of a private family. The estate has direct links to British royalty, and can be traced back to the 12th century. In the 17th century, the manor was granted to Henry Hastings by James I, but by the late 18th century, the estate was in the hands of Robert Walpole, second Earl of Orford, and son of the first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole.
David Cross, director of Savills in Salisbury said that there have been not bids yet although a number of viewers, mainly British and on the hunt for investment opportunities.
He added that over the past five years, prices for UK agricultural land have tripled from £2,500 per acre to up to £7,000 now.
The increased demand is due to several factors. First, scarcity of supply. Cross said only 60,000 acres are sold in the UK each year, and large estates such as Ilsington come to market rarely.
Secondly, the attraction of a tangible asset as volatility continues to wreak havoc in the stock markets is clear. Cross said: "A unique estate like Ilsington is not going to fall in value, and the new owner will have an instant income from fishing rights and farm rents."
Thirdly, a number of tax incentives make buying agricultural land very appealing. Private investors qualify for inheritance tax relief on the transfer of agricultural property. The relief applies to the agricultural value of the asset only.
Also, after capital gains tax was hiked to 28% from 18% in this year's emergency budget, individuals are able to defer CGT by purchasing agricultural land with profits they may have made selling a business or a property.
Last month the historic 1,300 acre Shakenhurst Hall in Worcestershire went on the market for £12m, through Savills. The manor and estate has its own lake and landscaped parkland and shooting and fishing on the River Rea.
In the midst of the credit crunch between late 2008 and early 2009, the 2,000 acre Encombe estate in Dorset was sold to a private buyer for a fifth less than its guide price of £25m. The property was sold by Charles McVeigh III, chairman of Citigroup's Corporate and Investment Banking-Private Banking Partnership and previously co-chairman of Citigroup's European Investment Bank, who bought it for £11m in 2002.

I was recently asked to research the history of a large rural estate covering almost 2500 acres in the Dorset countryside. My task was a little different as it didn’t involve looking at the history of an individual house, but rather the estate as a whole. This, however, didn’t make it any less historical, in fact, the Ilsington estate, for sale with Chesterton Humberts, can be traced back to the 12th century and was formerly owned by Horatio Walpole, son of Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole.
For much of its early history, the Ilsington estate was part of Puddletown manor and the earliest records show it was granted to Norman lord, Richard de Redvers, who came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066. By the 13th century, the manor passed to the priory of Christ Church, who held it until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 1540s.
In the 17th century, James I granted the manor of Puddletown to Henry Hastings, second son of George, fourth Earl of Huntingdon. The Hastings family had strong links with royalty, including Henry, third Earl of Huntingdon, who was knight of the garter and had charge of Mary Queen of Scots for a time.
By the 18th century, Puddletown manor had passed to Robert Walpole, son of the first Prime Minister of England, Sir Robert Walpole. After Robert Walpole, second Earl of Orford passed away in 1751 the estate passed to his son, Sir George Walpole, but he died unmarried and the estate passed to the youngest son or Sir Robert Walpole (Sir George’s uncle), Horatio Walpole, who became the fourth Earl of Orford in 1791.
Horatio (Horace) Walpole was a politician, like his father, but is often most remembered as the creator of the gothic villa, Strawberry Hill, in west London. Horatio Walpole also wrote a number of books, including gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto. After his death in 1797, Puddletown manor, with Ilsington, passed to Horatio’s cousin, also Horatio, Baron Walpole of Wolterton.
Throughout this period, the Walpoles were absentee landlords and the estate was managed by land agents. Ilsington House and the estate were leased, with the most renowned lessee, General Thomas Garth, principal equerry to George III and it was at this time that the young princesses, Mary, Sophia and Amelia, along with the Duke of York, stayed in Ilsington House.
Puddletown manor continued in the hands of the Walpole family throughout the 19th century, but in 1861 the Ilsington estate was purchased by John Brymer, Esq. John Brymer was the first landlord to live in Ilsington House. The estate passed to his son, William Ernest Brymer, who held a number of prominent positions, including M.P. for Dorchester and South Dorset and from 1887 was High Sheriff for Dorset.
The Ilsington estate offers extensive farming land, as well as a number of farm buildings and cottages, along with woodlands, fishing rights to the River Frome and shooting and stalking.
