Abbotsbury Arnold Family History by Sheridon Rayment
The London Journal of 1752 claimed that "all the people of Abbotsbury, including the vicar, are thieves, smugglers and plunderers of wrecks".
Abbotsbury history is rich in stories of pirates, shipwrecks, gypsies and smuggling.
Dorset is steeped in smuggling and shipwreck history .
Smuggling was a common and lucrative activity Abbotsbury. The secluded coves and hidden bays dotted around the Dorset shoreline provided ample opportunity for piracy. In 1737 the cover was blown on the Ship Inn, the local smuggling headquarters, when three-quarters of a ton of tea, together with rum, brandy, silk and cotton, were discovered stashed under a hedge on a road nearby.
It has been an accusation that along with smuggling, the people of the area also were involved in the deliberate wrecking of vessels, which were then plundered. De Hoop (The Hope), a treasure ship returning to Amsterdam from the Spanish South American colonies, was stranded on the Chesil Beach on the night of 16 January 1748. Thousands flocked to the beach from nearby villages and the towns of Weymouth and Portland.
The crew, who narrowly escaped with their lives, put the loss at £25,000, a vast fortune then. Rev Thomas Franklyn preached a sermon at Fleet to remind parishioners of the Acts of Parliament relating to ships stranded on the coast and the penalties for plundering: “This has long been looked upon as a thing right and lawful to be done”. It was thought the Spanish and Dutch were pirates so plundering was not unlawful.
In 1753 the “Elizabeth Canning case” concerning kidnap, gypsies, smuggling and false evidence, led to the London Journal describing Abbotsbury people as “thieves, smugglers and plunderers of wrecks”.
The Ship Inn and two members of the Arnold family Richard and Melchesideck, featured in the trial of Elizabeth Canning in 1753: she claimed to have been kidnapped by a gypsy family led by Mary Squires, her son George and daughter Lucy. The trial initially found for Canning, but the Mayor of London Sir Crisp Gascoyne, wasn't so easily fooled and investigated the Squires' family alibi. The trial took a turn when it was revealed how the gypsies had spent the New Year in Abbotsbury, an alibi backed by many Abbotsbury locals. Elizabeth Canning's extremely unlikely story would have had Mary Squires and her children hanging from the gallows. In the end the truth prevailed and Elizabeth Canning was found guilty of perjury and transported for her crimes.

Fleet, Dorset, England.
Fleet is a small, scattered village and civil parish in south Dorset, England, situated approximately 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Weymouth. It consists of the small settlements of East Fleet, West Fleet, Fleet House, and Fleet Common, all of which are close to the shore of The Fleet, a brackish lagoon behind Chesil Beach. The name "Fleet" is derived from fleot, Old English for an inlet or estuary. The Great Storm of 1824 caused waves to breach Chesil Beach, and many of the buildings in the village were destroyed, including the nave of the original parish church.[3] An eye-witness described the event: ''At six o'-clock on the morning of the 23rd I was standing with other boys by the gate near the cattle pound when I saw, rushing up the valley, the tidal wave, driven by a hurricane and bearing upon its crest a whole haystack and other debris from the fields below. We ran for our lives to Chickerell, and when we returned found that five houses had been swept away and the church was in ruins.'[2]
OPC The Fleet
On the 24th November 1824 a huge storm hit causing much damage to the towns and villages along the coast of Dorset. Fleet suffered badly when a huge wave crashed over the chesil bank, past the lagoon and into the village.
The church being very close to The Fleet was almost completely destroyed and what remains today (above) is only a small part of the original church. After the storm which destroyed most of the original village it was rebuilt further inland. The new church of the Holy Trinity (right) was rebuilt using money given from collections made at other churches. Some of the relics not destroyed in the flood were taken from the old church and placed in the new one.

Melchesideck Arnold of Abbotsbury, was a witness at the Elizabeth Canning trial, in his sworn testimony he stated,
“ I am a blacksmith, and live at Abbotsbury:
I know the old woman perfectly well, and the girl on the left hand, and the man behind her: they are her son and daughter the last time I saw them all three, was January last was twelve month; I saw on an evening at the old Ship at Abbotsbury.
Mr.Willies. Do you mean Old Stile New?-
Arnold. I mean this present calculated time; I remember it was on the 1st of January at night; the young man and young woman danced, and I played on the violin.
Do you know who was Lucy’s partner?-
Her partner was William Clarke, and George Squires’ partner was Mary Gibbons; they might give over dancing at eleven or twelve at night.
Did you see them afterwards?---
I be not positive I saw them the next day, but I saw them several times that week there; I saw them on the Saturday night in particular, that week, they were dancing again, and the old woman sat in the dancing room; she was in the kitchen on the Monday night; sitting by the fire-side; I also saw them the next Monday being the 8th; they were then in Gibbon’s house; I heard they went away the Tuesday, being the next day.
Cross-examined by Mr Williams.
Had you any knowledge of them before this time you talk of? –
I don’t remember any perfect knowledge I had of them; but I have heard say they were there three years before, but I don’t remember I ever saw them before.
What business do they follow?---
I don’t know that, for I never dealt with them.
Where did you see them these times you mention?-
They were at the Ship, and I don’t know that I saw them at any other house.

ALL BAPTISED AT ST NICOLAS CHURCH ABBOTSBURY DORSET
The church of St. Nicholas, Abbotsbury, Dorset, is a very ancient Gothic fabric: it has a fine square embattled tower, 5 bells, and antique porch: over the western door is a curious figure, emblematic of the Trinity - an old man in a sitting posture, with a crucifix between his knees and a dove at his right ear: on the north side the windows are Gothic, the walls being surmounted by pinnacles; the windows on the south side are Debased English, 1660: the interior consists of a chancel, nave, and aisles, separated by piers and pointed arches ; it has an antique font: the sittings are of pannelled oak: in the pulpit, which is beautifully carved, are two holes from bullets, said to have been fired in at the windows by Cromwell's soldiers; here is also an organ : in the chancel is a handsome oak altar-piece, having the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and Ten Commandments, in gold 1etters on a black ground ; the remains of Orc, the founder, are deposited under this chancel. In the graveyard is a large stone coffin, dug out of the ruins of the abbey, but whose remains it contained is unknown. The registers date from the year 1574 christenings, 1567 marriages and burials. The Arnold family of Abbotsbury are buried here.
