This Calendar is believed to contain a list of all Dorset wills, between 1313 and 1700, inclusive, proved in the Prerogative Court di' Canterbury, and now preserved in the Probate Registry at Somerset House, London. It has been compiled directly from the Will Registers and has been collated with the Probate Act books from their commencement in 1526, by which some addi tional accuracy is ensured.

Deserted village of Bardolfeston
The deserted medieval village of Bardolfeston is thought to be one of the best preserved in Dorset with a unique plan of rectangular crofts overlain by an oblique street plan. The village will contain archaeological and environmental evidence relating to its construction, development, social organisation, agricultural practices, domestic arrangements, economic activity, trade, decline and abandonment and overall landscape context.
The valley of the Piddle is also notable as the location of Bardolfeston, one of the most familiar deserted villages of Dorset, which lies adjacent to Athelhampton. Bardolfeston was originally a parish in its own right but was finally abandoned in the 16th century after a long decline attributed to the building of Athelhampton House in 1495.
